Widows for Peace through Democracy attended the NGO Committee on the Status of Women, Geneva, in the run up to the CSW Beijing +20 in March 2015, New York.

Along with general contributions, our founder Margaret Owen was a speaker on the Women and Poverty Roundtable.
Her presentation was well received and highlighted the effects of generational poverty due to widowhood. Additionally WPD successfully argued for inclusion of marital status as part of the essential data required to fully tackle gender inequality.

As we are well aware, without figures of the numbers of widows, governments are not focused on dealing with the discrimination that widows so often face. Read more about the recommendation and outcomes from the event here.

Of note, both Lakshmi Puri, UN Women Deputy Executive Director and Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda NGO CSW Geneva President, mentioned widows as needing particular attention as we move forward in order to act, advance and achieve women’s rights.
